Last week HYPELINE covered a Black Lives Matter protest that turned into a cookout with the local police in Wichita, Kansas. The event served as a medium where the community and local police could rebuild trust and hold an open dialogue; it also included pick-up basketball, bouncy castles, and bubbles. However, an official chapter of the Black Lives Matter Network denounced the actions of the rogue BLM activists.
The chapter based out of Washington, D.C. stated on Twitter that, “[The cookout] is not in line with our principles.”
“THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL #BlackLivesMatter CHAPTER! THIS IS NOT IN LINE WITH OUR PRINCIPLES.@Blklivesmatter https://twitter.com/theroot/status/755806803993255938 …”
The tweet has quickly become a source of controversy in the Twitter sphere. After all, if building trust with officers and a community discussion isn’t in line with the organization’s principles, then exactly what is?
A person that wishes to remain anonymous told HYPELINE:
After engaging in discussion with the DC chapter of Black Lives Matter in regards to their tweet, I was promptly blocked. It seems as if a civil discussion is not what this group is after. It raises an important question: What are the motives of the BLM movement?
HYPELINE reached out to the DC chapter for comment, however we have not received a response. Stay tuned as the story is still developing.

Shortly after Black Lives Matter issued a tweet in response to a cookout with the local police in Wichita, Kansas, the formal organization in Washington D.C. responded to Hypeline‘s request for comment.
“We [Black Lives Matter: DC] are for police abolition not reform,” they said in their statement. “We want to defund the police and invest in Black futures.”
In addition, they stated: “The police kill Black people because their role is to protect the interest of a white supremacist capitalist patriarchal state not black communities. No amount of meetings or picnics will change that.”
Read their full statement:
It was not a denouncement, it was a clarification. The media reported it as an action put on by the BLM network but no chapter was involved. Black Lives Matter is network with chapters all over the world, it should not be conflated with the Movement for Black Lives or other movements that address police reform. As a chapter of the BLM network we can only speak for us. We [Black Lives Matter: DC] are for police abolition not reform. We want to defund the police and invest in Black futures. We envision and fight for a world in which we do not believe in or have armed individuals whose supposed authority comes from oppressive state apparatuses from outside our community to “protect us.”
We do not believe that the solution to police brutality is breaking bread with our oppressors. The police kill Black people because their role is to protect the interest of a white supremacist capitalist patriarchal state not black communities. No amount of meetings or picnics will change that.
