One of the most disturbing developments from this election in the increasing contempt, from people on all sides of the political spectrum, of those who do not share the same opinions. One insidious example is Grubhub CEO Matt Maloney who recently asked any employees who supported Donald Trump to resign their jobs. Citing a desire to create an open and inclusive environment, Maloney essentially declared that over 59 million people were now unwelcome at his company based solely on their political opinions.
This is not how a truly tolerant person would react to seeing a candidate they opposed to win the White House. Maloney thinks that anyone who supported Trump must necessarily be racist, sexist, or homophobic. Although I’m sure there are some actual racists who support Trump, it would be illogical to assume that the entirety of Trump’s supporters are bigoted.
Behind Maloney’s thin veneer of tolerance, lies an unwillingness to have open and honest debate on the political issues facing our country. By asking pro-Trump employees to resign, Maloney is seeking to bury his head in the sand and pretend that a majority of Americans agree with him politically. By writing off all dissent as bigotry, Maloney is attempting to relieve himself of his civic responsibility to try and understand his fellow citizens.
Luckily, Maloney is currently in a minority. I believe that most Americans still do value free speech and open debate. However, if more people begin dismissing opposing viewpoints without understanding them, as Maloney has done, we will become a people incapable of civil discourse.
