Abortion is both immoral and harmful to women, which is why it should be banned entirely in the United States. This issue is so contentious because, once it was legalized, millions of women had become dependent upon abortions, making it extremely difficult to take away or regulate a right cherished by so many. The peaceful, tolerant Left has been trying for decades to push their pro-abortion agenda, which has resulted in at least fifty million children being aborted by their parents’ choice since 1970.
Before we can travel down the yellow brick road to abortion enlightenment, one must first grasp what exactly abortion is. Abortion is “the early ending of a pregnancy,” which is the polite way of saying that the unborn child is killed. This can be done two ways, medically and surgically. In a medical abortion, the mother can take medicine to end the pregnancy, or, after 9 weeks, surgical abortion is the mother’s only choice for ending the pregnancy. In surgical abortion, the child is pulled out of the womb, most of the time in pieces.
Most abortion proponents misunderstand what is being yanked out of the womb (they usually say “a clump of cells”). Between conception and nine weeks, the child is an embryo, and after nine weeks the child becomes a fetus. At just three weeks old, the embryo has a full of set of DNA, which will determine every physical trait of the child. By the time the embryo is six weeks old, it has a heartbeat and it is beginning to form its facial features as well as the limbs. In week ten, the fetus has a functioning nervous system and the bones are hardening. So, by the end of the first trimester, the fetus has a complete, unique genetic code, functioning heartbeat and nervous system, as well as partially formed organs and a skeleton. The embryo/fetus in the womb is a living child, not a clump of cells that has no unique features.
Despite the scientific evidence that the fetus is quite alive and unique during the first trimester, many leftists argue that the fetus is not alive, or if the fetus is alive, its life holds no value because it is so undeveloped. Firstly, the most crucial parts of development are done in the first trimester, so the term undeveloped is inappropriate and wrong to use when discussing embryos or fetuses. Secondly, 18 U.S. Code § 3596 – “Implementation of a sentence of death” specifically lays out the value of a child’s life in the womb. In section (b) of the statute, it says, “A sentence of death shall not be carried out upon a woman while she is pregnant.” If a woman who is pregnant with a child cannot be executed, then, according to U.S. law, that unborn child’s life has value and should not be ended.
Additionally, most abortions occur in preventable situations. Firstly, there is no excuse for abortion when contraceptives are so readily available to anyone and everyone in the United States and most people can get them for free due to Obamacare. Pregnancy is, in fact, preventable without having to kill anyone. What if the child was conceived from rape? If a mother would not kill the child when he or she is 2 years old from the date of conception, then why would it be acceptable for the mother to kill the child when he or she is 2 months old from the date of conception? Just because a child is conceived from rape does not mean that the child’s life immediately loses any and all value. If a child is unwanted, he or she can be put up for adoption, but to abort the child would be extremely immoral because the parents would be killing an innocent child purely for their convenience.
An unborn child’s life may have value, and there may be no valid excuse for taking an unborn child’s life, but many immoral Americans simply do not care. They argue that abortion is their constitutional right. It is already established that, according to 18 U.S. Code § 3596, an unborn child’s life has inherent value and should not be taken. Many Leftists will point to Roe v. Wade as evidence for support for abortion. In actuality, the Roe v. Wade ruling was unconstitutional because it disregarded the 14th Amendment and invented a phantom right protected in the same amendment. Dissenter Justice William Rehnquist explained, “To reach its result the Court necessarily has had to find within the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment a right that was apparently completely unknown to the drafters of the Amendment.” The 14th Amendment actually reads, “Nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” It is the 14th Amendment that clearly says that the state cannot kill anybody, including a child, without a trial with a jury. If a non-state member were to kill a child, then it would technically be murder. Leftists will argue that the child is not a living thing, but this is a dangerous and foolish fallacy. The child is not only alive, but his or her life has inherent value.
It is murder to kill an unborn child, and it is illegal to do so, but Leftists like to think they found one last loophole to abuse. Leftists claim that parents are entitled to aborting their child because the child is the property of his or her parents. Thankfully, the Constitution disallows this fallacy in the 13th Amendment when it says, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” It is illegal for any person in the United States to be the property of any other person. Another point can be made when looking at the Declaration of Independence when it says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” All men are not born equal. All men are created equal, which would mean that all men are equal in the womb. It would be ludicrous to say that only some children are entitled to life when all are created equal. In addition to all men being equal, life is considered an unalienable right.
Many abortion proponents argue that abortion is good for the mother’s health. However, abortion is actually bad for the mother’s health as well. Women who receive abortions suffer from an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide. The Journal of Anxiety Disorders published a study that concluded: “women who aborted their unintended pregnancies were 30 percent more likely to subsequently report all the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder than those women who had carried their unintended pregnancies to term.” The Southern Medical Journal and the European Journal of Public Health found that women who had abortions were 2.5 and 3.5 times more likely to commit suicide, respectively. In a New Zealand study, the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found that 42 percent of women with a history of abortion suffered from major depression in the past four years. Medical Science Moniter found that American women who had abortions, when compared to women who gave birth, were 65 percent more likely to suffer from long-term clinical depression. If pro-abortion or pro-choice is about women’s health, then it is a deeply misguided and misinformed movement as abortion has very negative effects on the health of women.
Despite the overwhelming amount of evidence of why abortion is immoral and dangerous, some Christians of all people are still pro-abortion. Psalm 139:13-16 reads, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Not only does every embryo have a unique genetic code, but also God has given them that unique code. The instant conception takes place, a life is created and God knows what that life can and will accomplish. By taking the child’s life, the mother and father are choosing to reject God’s divine plan and law and instead choosing to do what is most convenient for them.
It is sad that abortion has become so widespread, but like any harmful, immoral practice, it is the silent majority who must speak out to end this evil act. It is a fact that abortion is legally murder, unconstitutional, unhealthy, and unbiblical, and the Left knows this. They simply do not care. While stating the indisputable evidence may persuade some men and women, the majority of abortion proponents cannot and will not be won over by logic. Christians and conservatives alike will be forced to pass, as a last resort, harsh and strict legislation protecting the lives of unborn children. The question is not when they are going to stop, but who is going to stop them.
